The diamond ring is mostly a creation of the twentieth century. Diamonds were discovered five hundred years ago, but because of their rarity diamond rings were only affordable by royalty and wealthy people.
Diamond rings are the most popular engagement rings and diamond wedding rings are now very much in vogue. In fact a diamond ring is a perfect gift to be presented to a loved one on any occasion and while diamond rings have traditionally been a single diamond or solitaire, the current trend is a three stone ring with a centre stone (diamond or other gemstone such as a ruby, emerald or sapphire) with two diamonds either side. There are over half a dozen settings to choose from with the prong remaining the first choice closely followed by the bezel. The modern and “hot” metal for diamond rings is platinum, and although it is pricier, it is also heavier, hypoallergenic, practically scratch proof and will never tarnish.
Diamonds present the ultimate in adornment with their ability to sparkle and refract the light and their durability meaning they will last forever. Nowadays diamond rings come in spectacular shapes and cuts. The most common are round or oval shaped, but you can also get cuts like the brilliant, princess, marquise, emerald and also pear and heart. A princess-cut diamond may have anything from 57 to 70 facets with the perfect diamond being a brilliant cut with 58 facets. Fancy or coloured diamonds are in demand with canary yellow and pink especially popular in today's market. Diamonds that are naturally fancy will retain their colour forever, while laboratory enhanced diamonds will cost much less but their colour may fade over time.
One of the easiest methods of cleaning your diamond ring is to use a soft bristle toothbrush to softly rub it in a bowl of warm water with a few drops of washing up liquid. It is advisable to get your diamond ring checked over on a yearly basis to ensure that the diamond is still secure and have the precious metal professionally cleaned and polished at the same time.
